Introducing TechneWiki

TechneWiki is a forum for the discussion of the Techne (pronounced as `tech-nee') container that runs exclusively on the OSGi service platform. Techne is the subject of a paper that hopefully will be published at a future conference proceedings such as EclipseCon and/or ApacheCon. This wiki is quite unique in a couple of ways:

  • It promotes widespread collaboration of ideas.
  • It is a rapid means to achieve critical mass for developing an actual product.
Ultimately, this forum acts as a planning tool for launching an open source project on Techne.

What is a Container?

A container is an execution environment that sits on top of a service platform, hosts various types of technologies, and manages the applications using them. The container controls completely the dynamics involved in configuration, loading and discovery of services while ensuring that the technologies it serves will work cohesively and interchangeably for all the different applications it is hosting. More formal definitions of the terms we use can be found in Taxonomy. Details of the project are found in our Project Catalog section.

Sharing the Vision

Various scenarios can be satisfied with a pure OSGi container. You can help formulate the vision by defining your own user story. Here is a summary of scenarios that have been contributed so far:

Peter has completed his plug-in and now he wants to perform a series of integrated tests with a plug-in that another developer, Sally, has recently developed. He finds it a snap with the new Techne container to load Sally's plug-in and merge it with his own to start testing even without actually communicating with Sally who works at a remote site. More
Since his company does not have a permanent DP department, Jeff finds himself forced to perform the role of a system administrator who has to manage the company's wide-area network storage system. Fortunately, storage equipment provided by a favored vendor had been bundled with management software built on top of Techne. Read how Jeff was able to overcome his anxiety and even improved his department's performance despite the seemingly extra burden imposed on him and his overly-stretched staff. More
This is all about eclipse using OSGi dynamic behaviour for testing and running components right inside the same VM.
As such, it could be possible to change the implementation of certain IDE-functionality and update the behaviour right inside the eclipse inside without the need of separated sandbox-instances.More

Resources

  • Because we will pick things from many different resources like articles, papers, technologies (and brains) we manage the most important ones on the ResourceReferences page.

Activity and Milestones

We organize our activities for the first iterations on the initial activies page.

Call for Participation

Two levels of participation are requested to make this wiki operable. The first level is that of co-author. The next level and equally as important is participant. This is not a "pick your brains" and "leave the rest to us" deal. This is actually an opportunity for you to actively participate in an important open source project (at least we think it is!) in the making.

Note: To get involved, please create your profile by clicking on the Log In link on top of the page. Then send me an email so that I can add your login id to any of these groups. As a member of a group, you will be able to edit or start a discussion thread on any of the pages owned by the group.

Thanks for being a part of making tomorrow's software technology possible today!
